Good News, everyone! The NSCA has recently clarified the current public health restrictions around the sport of curling and our club is now able to offer additional curling opportunities in addition to the current team practice options.

We are now able to allow members to take part in curling scrimmages under the following conditions:

1. There are allowed to be up to 25 participants in the ice shed at the same time, but they must be part of a consistent, exclusive group. This means that we can offer a regular playing opportunity to a “bubble” of up to 25 people, but that bubble can only include the same participants each time they play. It also means that a member of one bubble cannot take part in any other bubble. This restriction is meant to reduce the risk of spread of COVID-19 outside of each limited bubble.

2. There can be no officials, scoring, events, league standings or ladder system that would promote competitive intensity. These scrimmages or practices are meant to be recreational or developmental opportunities, not competitive activities that might promote risky behaviours in contravention of COVID-19 precautions. For example, a bubble of six teams (24 people) may play against different teams within the bubble each time they play for the sake of variety, but not in the interests of recording scores and naming champions at the end of the season.

3. Restrictions on travel to Chester for members living within HRM boundaries were removed in mid-December, so all club members are eligible to take part in any of the proposed bubbles.

These arrangements may only be relevant for a short period of time, since current public health restrictions are in place until midnight on January 24. At that time, they may be reduced, increased or extended and we will have to adjust accordingly at that time. We would therefore like to offer the following ad hoc opportunities for at least the remainder of this week and next:

Junior bubbles will be coordinated by Beth Atherton and a separate email will be sent to all junior members and coaches with instructions for them. All non-junior members of the club who wish to take part in any of the groups listed above are to contact the coordinator of the group that they wish to join by phone or email as soon as possible. Requests can be made on an individual or team basis, as capacity allows. As the lists approach the maximum capacity, we may have to look at more than one draw on a popular night or asking folks to move to another bubble that is not yet at capacity. Once the bubbles have been set, coordinators will provide instructions to bubble members about timing and other logistical arrangements.

Because this is a temporary arrangement, we ask for the patience and understanding of all members as we sort things out.

The 2020 edition of the Chester Curling Club’s 37th Annual, Snowball Mixed Bonspiel, was by all accounts a huge success. It provided for a fun filled event with keen curling competition and renewed friendships and rivalries that are synonymous with our club’s character. There were 12 teams participating in all, including many local hybrid and league teams, as well as, teams from Halifax and Windsor.

Friday evening draws got off smoothly as teams were eager to get an early read on the ice and have that first game behind them. When teams were finished, they were able to relax with live entertainment and enjoy refreshments, and fine hors d’oeuvres. Although there were a couple minor power outages followed by a “one hour-ish” outage on Saturday, it did not dampen the spirits of the participants. This rather contributed to a festive atmosphere and the seventh end “candle light” snack and beverage break that everyone seemed to enjoy and take in stride.

Once again we wish to congratulate the winning teams;

  • 1st Team Taylour Stevens, Adam Cocks, Kate Callaghan and Bret Dorey
  • 2nd Team Dan Fraser, Haylee Nauss, Wendy Sheppard and John Sheppard
  • 3rd Team Greg Rafuse, Micayla Dorey, Patrick Fraser and Rachel Wilwang
  • 4th Team Renata Graham, Charles Walker, Darlene Gates and Ken Johnson.

We wish to extend a huge “Thank You” to our dedicated volunteers, without which, the Snowball would not run as smoothly or be as successful. Special thanks goes out to the following; Carla Rafuse, overall coordinator, MJ Barkhouse and her helpers, Diane and Cindy, for the wonderful meal and Beth Atherton with the junior curlers for serving, Danette Grey for procurement, food prep and set-up, Linda Townson and Norma Swinamer for food prep, set-up, Beth Bleasdale for canvassing, bartenders Morven McLaughlin, Tommy McLaughlin, Dean Dunford and Dale Rafuse.

Thank you, Kevin Koloff and the Gypsy Minstrel Band, for the live entertainment.

To all club members who donated food, be it the painstakingly decorated and (very tasty) star cookies, loaf cakes or store bought items, we are most appreciative. And here is a “shout out” to Dan Fraser, our MC, for the banquet and awards presentations.

Lastly, let us not forget the excellent and challenging ice provided by Randy Cocks.

Well done and thank you all for making your curling club a welcoming place to be!

Now that curling is over for the year (and the Club is closed), we have something exciting to look forward to next season... celebrating the 50th anniversary of the opening of the Chester Curling Club!

The Executive is working closely with The Church Memorial Park staff in planning various activities to commemorate the opening of The Eleanor Pew Morris Memorial Rink on February 14th, 1970.

Thanks to a recently re-discovered scrapbook from the Ladies Division, newspaper clips and photos have been preserved showing the early history of the Club and women's curling in Chester.

Stay tuned for more details on plans to mark this great occasion...

Here are a few snapshots from the scrapbook...

The Chester Curling Club is located on Pig Loop Road, in the picturesque seaside village of Chester, on Nova Scotia's scenic South Shore. Home to one of the largest sailing regattas in Eastern Canada (the Chester Race Week in August), the village is full of charming shops, dock-side restaurants, historic white Cape Cod-style homes and Nova Scotia's oldest (1764) rural pub, The Fo'c'sle.

The Club is an integral part of the Charles E. Church Recreational Center (aka The Park) along with the Chester Tennis Club and the Eleanor Pew Morris Memorial Rink. Established in 1969, the Chester Curling Club is a 4 sheet, heated facility with lockers, downstairs bar and lounge and ice viewing area. We offer Learn to Curl classes, drop-in day curling, mens and ladies evenings, competitive leagues and a robust Junior programe from which we are proud to recognize Team Mary Fay, winners of the 2015 Canada Games Silver Medal, 2016 Canadian Junior Women's Champions and the 2016 World Junior Champions.

Andrew Atherton (coach), Janique LeBlanc (lead), Karlee Burgess (second) and Kristin Clarke (third)

Our club exists solely through the continuing volunteer efforts of our dedicated members; everything from installing and maintaining the ice, organizing leagues, hosting bonspiels to baking and preparing home-cooked meals for club pot-luck dinners...our members do it all!

At CCC, you'll find a warm, lively social atmosphere with friendly, welcoming members. As well, it's a safe and entertaining place for the entire family to play in one of Canada's best winter sports! Recreational curling provides a great way for all ages to excercise and it's never been this much fun!
